Geo-targeted Guerrilla Marketing with @HurricaneParty’s New App

Ok, So I am so excited about finding this new iPhone app that my buddy Glenn Banton turned me on to, check this out.

Austin based start up company Hurricane Party, has taken geo-targeting to the next level by creating a free iPhone app to help spread the word of social gathering. The Daily Texan explained it well, “Hurricane Party is an iPhone application that helps create a spontaneous social event by allowing the user to broadcast a potential get-together, locate friends, pinpoint event locations and get the ball rolling.” The app not only allows you to send out invitations to get people together, but also monitors where people are congregated through its internal geo-targeted maps.

Austin Entertainment e-magazine, Austin Thrillist explains it well, “Start your “hurricane party” by selecting time & location, then choosing guests from people cross-referenced in both your Facebook and phone contacts; your chosen few get a text (to which they’ll respond “I’ll Be There”, “Maybe Stop By” or “Rain Check”), and the party’s geo-displayed with a spinning storm image that changes speed and color based on event popularity — from CAT1 to CAT5, but not LOLCat, because that’s so popular it’ll level the city. HP also combs your social networks for public events created by other Hurricaners, displaying which of those gatherings your friends will attend, plus real-time wall-style updates — so you’ll know if your friends are actually attending, or just RSVPeasy.”

The Daily Texan goes on to explain, “One incentive of using the app is setting up a Hurricane Party with a partner company…where you will get some form of discount for taking a group of friends there. Businesses can also go on the website and initiate an offer for a discount, which can be accessed by any Hurricane Party user.It would be a win-win situation, Price said: The local business gets more customers and the Hurricane Party user gets a discount, as well as some help deciding which local spots to frequent.”

With that in mind, from a non-traditional marketing perspective, you can turn this technology on its axis and utilize this monitoring system for event marketing and guerrilla marketing. By having the ability to see where the highest congregation of people are, say for an large event weekend such as Austin City Limits, South by Southwest, North by Northwest, or even Warped tour, you can plan a rapid attack (drive by) marketing blitz for your activated street teams. This would also enable a non-traditional marketing specialists the ability to strategically place any guerrilla marketing stunts, graphics, and collateral to increase the number of impressions gained.

I just watched a video, you know one of those Multi-Level Marketing videos that someone sent me, and I recognized several key points that it mentioned to be be very insightful, maybe even valuable. I broke them down for you so that you can be the judge.

Things Wealthy People Do To Become More Wealthy

Utilize Multiple Streams of Income.

Wealthy people don’t just focus on one source of income like most Americans who drone every day at their place of work. The invest. They create a portfolio. They don’t rely on one income source especially in a turbulent “anything goes” economy where an employer can get rid of you for no reason.

Utilize the Power of Leverage.

Time vs. Effort – This is the whole reason why there is a “Boss” structure. The wealthy are in those positions of power and utilize that stronghold to delegate others so they can capitalize from their effort. Capitalism 101.

Collect Things Deemed Valuable.

Human Beings are inherently have a collectors mentality. Either as a hobby, or form of associating a collection with wealth. Most people use their wealth to collect junk, things that have no monetary value and only lead to more debt. Wealthy people collect things that can generate value. Instead of collecting bobble heads, collect certified sports memorabilia. Instead of collecting wine bottles or corks, collect vintage fine wines. Instead of collecting model cars, collect real cars.

Capitalize on Timing.

Wealthy people research the market they live in, look around for investment opportunities and then capitalize on them before the masses realize it is an opportunity.

The Nokia N8 film below is claimed to be the world's smallest stop animation and was seemingly taken on a Nokia N8. We actually don't care what it was taken with, we just laud this beautiful effort. Kudos.

But now go out and buy a Nokia N8.

Your Answer Is Under A Bottle Cap: @MagicHat utilizes the bottle cap as an intimate medium

It has been the longest day ever at work, you get home and dig in your fridge or to your favorite watering hole and order a beer. As that cold, moist glass bottle looks back at you, you decide to pop the top and take that first refreshing swig. Suddenly a refreshed, satisfied, relaxed emotion overwhelms you and at that very moment you look down at the bottle cap sitting in your hand and read, "Here's Looking Back At You, Kid." You have just had an intimate moment with your beer brand of choice.

Vermont based brewery, Magic Hat is one of several brewers that understand this intimate moment and have done a wonderful job at capitalizing on this moment as a medium to share humorous thoughts in hopes of establishing a stronger brand loyalty.

Personally, I have a weird fetish with bottle caps. Because of their history, they remind me of a bygone era of a simpler time. Since college, I have kept every bottle cap that I have popped at home a big glass jar. I hope to one day use them for an art project. Just call it one of my quirks.

In 1892 William Painter patented the bottle cap, then called the Crown Cork named after the round cork insert that resembled the Queen of England's crown, I doubt he ever thought that one day brands such as Mickey's Malt Liquor, Magic Hat, Miller Brewing Company's Red Dog, and even Snapple would ever use it to share funny jokes, antidotes, riddles, or puzzles with their patrons. Maybe that's because advertising was then just beginning. In any case, pop that top tonight at Happy Hour and share your millisecond of amusement.
